Physical and Mental HealthAs an organization of predominantly African American women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its membership, but also the well-being of families and communities at large. Journey to Wellness:  Committing our Bodies to Physical and Mental Health is the signature Physical and Mental Health “call to action”.  The initiative addresses the challenges of living holistic and health lives.

The Springfield-Decatur Area Alumnae Chapter structures its programs in physical and mental health around the three-pronged approach of ‘Journey to Wellness’:

  1. 1.  A refocused Lose to Win! To include Physical Activity and Healthy Eating. The Chapter does an intense ‘Delta-sized project. Every month members track the miles, walked, run, bicycled, etc. The member logging the most miles at the end of the sorority year receives special recognition and prizes.
  2. Physical Health: Chronic Diseases. The Chapter is very involved in the Midwest initiative of cancer awareness. Special projects for October, cancer awareness month were held including a cancer awareness and exhibit for Chapter members and ‘Paint It Pink’ (fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness) in Mueller Park in Decatur, October 17, 2015. Sorors formed Team Delta to walk and raise funds for Diabetes in October.  The Chapter will participate and raise funds for the sixth year for the “Come Together Let’s Walk’ cancer project.  At the end of the sorority year a health fair will be held providing information on several health concerns in the African American Community
  3. 3. Mental Health. The Chapter co-sponsors with the Springfield Public Schools the Council on Child Abuse and Domestic Violence. This group provides information and referral Services. Sorors support and participate in Mental Health Fairs that are held during the sorority year.
